CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Quattro Bajeena, AKA Char Aznable (AKA Edward Mass, AKA Casval Rem Deikun, AKA My Name Is Inigo Montoya, You Killed My Father, Prepare To Die)
Character Canon: Mobile Suit Gundam.
History: The Gundam Wikia talks about him a lot. I am largely pulling from him during the Zeta Gundam era, hence why Char is calling himself Quattro and wearing sunglasses like an asshole. That said, it's an AU so the timeline will be totally different anyways.
AU History: Char Aznable came from Gigas, originally. He was born Casval Rem Deikun, the son of an activist from Gigas who took issue with many of their policies. His mother was the rare immigrant from Caldera, who fell in love with his father; given the man's political inclinations, it may be no surprise he got along with her. His father preached a philosophy of togetherness with the Pokemon that Gigas used. These ideas were, unfortunately, quite against the philosophy of Gigas. They did not emphasize the more martial and imperialist ideas that Gigas pursued, but rather critiqued them, and Casval's father drew the attention of the government.
Some of his father's friends turned against him, and assassinated him before he could rabble rouse any further. They blamed his death on nebulous traitors within Gigas, and used his death to bolster the cause of the very people that Casval's father wanted dead. They would have killed his children, too.
However, the Ral family, lifelong friends of the Deikuns saved them. They took them in and raised them in a small estate on the borderlands of Caldera and Gigas. They gave them new names, to hide their identities. Casval was raised as Edward Mass since he was young. He grew up here with a hunger for revenge instilled in him. He was taught that Gigas was the force responsible for his father's death, and his duty was revenge upon the city, its leadership, and his father's false friends. When he proved to be an Enlightened, thanks to his mother's bloodline, this was seen as a way to further his revenge.
When he was old enough, he took up the name that he would become famous with: Char Aznable. He joined Gigas's army, with a plan to infiltrate it and kill the leadership from within. A lifetime of training made him into a frightfully effective soldier. He joined the army shortly before the latest war with Caldera began in earnest. He fought against them, and successfully brought down five Calderan trainers on his own, earning the title "Red Comet" for the speed he showed on the battlefield. He became a commander within the military in short order.
He worked with the son of one of the men who betrayed his father. When this man received a command, Char decided to act: he betrayed him in the midst of the war, leading him into an ambush, and let the Calderan forces kill him. Char was reprimanded and demoted, but another commander in Gigas's forces took him up; he was placed over another group of young soldiers. He met one of them, a remarkable young woman who was a Psychic-type Enlightened like him. They formed a close bond; Char began to wonder about what the real role of Enlightened were. At the same time, though, she had a bond with a man he formed a rivalry with during the war.
When she died in combat, he was devastated. He had lost soldiers in his command already. This capped off these losses; they suggested to him that his drive for revenge had cost him those he loved and cared for, and never brought back his father. He came to see the way he pursued revenge as a mistake. Char Aznable still hated Gigas, but for more than taking his father from him. He felt they saw the world in the wrong light, and he needed to fix that.
He faked his death when Union intervened in the battle at Caldera. He fought the man that his deceased subordinate was killed by, who she loved too; then he took his helmet off and destroyed it, and vanished after that. Gigas thought that the Red Comet was dead.
Instead, Char went to Union in disguise; he took to wearing sunglasses, and gave himself a new name: Quattro Bajeena. He claimed to be from a small settlement to the north. He revealed his skill, and joined the Rangers; Char intended to find out what Union was about, and if it held a hope of changing the world to match the dreams of his father.
Canon Personality: Char Aznable is a rare individual. What he was noted for in Zeon's armed, first and foremost, was seeming initially detached and calm. He seemed unshakable; the worst situations never fazed him, and he kept a cool head with a certain smug sort of pride. He knows he is good, and it shows. When he was younger, this was outright cockiness. By the time he joined AEUG, though, this pride was a lot more subtle -- and his skill was a lot more proved. What people noticed, though, as they grew to know him wasn't the detached, cool way he handled situations.
No, it was that Char cared. He reached out to subordinates in subtle ways. He took pilots under his wing from day one and tried to protect them as best he could, and to guide them on the right path, so they did not repeat his mistakes. For a man who has lied about his identity and his goals for his entire adult life, Char could be shockingly sincere to those he cared for.
He was also an incredibly charismatic man. Later, he would come to lead the Neo-Zeon movement, and it isn't a surprise, really. Char knows how to present himself as incredibly likable; he is a natural born leader and can be very charming, knowing just what to say and just how to say it in one-on-one conversations and great speeches. This, it happens, is not quite a lie: he cares a great deal about people.
The death of Lalah Sune drove Char to care about others and see the world in a certain way. When it comes to the soldiers around him, especially the younger and more vulnerable ones like Lalah, he will try to fall into the role of mentor. But, he also sees the world as something that is broken; that needs action to fix it, and this may involve doing terrible things.
He used to be obsessed with revenge. He has come to see this as selfish. This doesn't mean that he has lost his ruthless edge, but rather that he applies it differently. It still comes out; when he found out how Haman Karn was using the young Mineva Zabi, he lost his temper and discarded any alliance between AEUG and Axis Zeon. When he became convinced that rendering Earth uninhabitable to advance mankind into Newtypes, the dire cost to the human race couldn't move him.
He is, similarly, capable of intense rashness. When he gets angry, he will do foolish things -- and while time and failure has taken the edge away from when he was younger, it has made those moments more heated. He will kill people if he thinks it necessary, and for all he acts calm, he can be pushed into doing very stupid things out of passion. For Char, things are often personal, even if he pretends otherwise. His failure to save Lalah, and later, his failure to save Camille drive him to both protect and hurt people.
His philosophy and outlook on life have been shaped by his failures. The world he wants to see, where Newtypes move humans to a new kind of understanding, is ultimately driven by the loss of Lalah. Even when he was younger, his father's death drove him to seek revenge and kill people he called friends.
He can be enormously self-deluding in that regard. He can look at the events in his life and convince himself that he is pursuing what is right for the entire world, rather than acting selfishly. He tries to be better than that; he tries to live to improve the world around him and help people, but sometimes he acts out of past personal failures. He has trouble admitting this, and he has more trouble letting go of the past in moments like that. He will forgive terrible traits in himself as necessary, too; he can't quite let go of his ruthlessness.
Char is also willing to lie and use people. If he is convinced something is for the greater good, he will excuse that. He won't be honest about who he is with others; he will also betray allies, if it works to the benefit of his cause.
He is, nonetheless, a man with a sense of honor, even if it is twisted. He does care, and he does try to help people and the world around him. Sometimes, Char fails to do that and won't recognize it. But he knows that he has made mistakes, and he even knows he will likely make more. He tries to help people not make more, and tries to make the world around him better.
AU Deviation: At Brave New World, Char is basically somewhere between his later Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam incarnation. He is still defined by his failure to protect his underlings, especially someone a lot like Lalah, but it's all fresher than Zeta Gundam. Gigas, moreover, has not been defeated like the Zabi family was. He wants to bring them down; he tells himself that it's because of what they represent. That may be part of it, but that desire for revenge is still there. He can still be a hotheaded asshole, like his younger self.
Notably, he does not have his father's feelings and thoughts about Newtypes. He isn't pushing for some sort of universal evolutionary track. However, he sees Enlightened as a hope for the future, and he has a very warm philosophy on Pokemon. He thinks the bond that Enlightened can have with Pokemon is their greatest strength, after his experiences in the war. He has mixed feelings on how Caldera and Union use their Enlightened, though. They should be more than soldiers and champions. This is a feeling that he is still developing; Gigas had few Enlightened, after all.
Canon Abilities: Char is an incredible Mobile Suit pilot in his canon. He is famously very, very fast and very hard to hit. He is also a Newtype, which means he is a psychic able to commune with other psychics telepathically and sense the actions of opponents before they happen, which makes him an even fiercer opponent. He can also control remote devices called funnels and bits.
Enlightened Abilities: At BNW, Char is an Enlightened with the Mastery of Battle ability. He is amazingly good at finding weaknesses and capitalizing on them; he earned his stripes as a commander and fighter in Gigas's army. He knows how to work with his Pokemon and command them; he also is pretty good at fighting beside them, though.
To that end, he is a Psychic and Flying type Enlightened. His evolutions are physically understated; he actually flies by creating air jets that left him up. In his first one, he emphasizes moving quickly, hitting enemies with powerful, quick diving attacks. He has a smattering of Normal and Fighting type moves that join with his Flying and Psychic attacks. His Psychic abilities are mostly limited to the occasional buff.
His second evolution improves on his Psychic abilities. He actually shows a few signs of it, then; he will occasionally produce a red glow around him, especially when he uses his abilities. Sometimes, this will mean afterimages left in his wake. He can command more intense wind buffets, and generally moves far faster. He can also fire beams of psychic energy.
His third and final evolution leaves him with a faint red glow at nearly all times. More than that, though, he gains the ability to manipulate remotes, if they're made for him -- this will basically let him do person-scale funnels.
He also has a personal item: a Heat Hawk. This axe was made in Gigas, and has a small stone battery that can cause the blade to heat up. It lets him do a Fire type melee attack.
Starter Pokémon: Char used to have a slew of Pokemon when he worked for Gigas. As Quattro Bajeena, he has one: a Fletchling, which he has named Rick Dias.
Notes/Special Considerations: He is the son of a Gigas activist and probably knows about life in Gigas. I contacted the mods via Private Plurk and worked the background details out there.
SAMPLES
1) What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
"They are partners... but more than that. They live in harmony with this world. It is something that we should try to learn from. Something to guide us."
2) What do you feel your role in Union is?
"As a Ranger, my job is to explore this world and understand it. To protect Union."
TOTAL LIE. This isn't to say that Char is hostile to Union, and that he doesn't want to protect it. But, he sees Union as a new kid on the block and possible powerhouse. He wants to understand it, to know where it came from, and what it might do. While he will protect it, he really is more interested in finding out how he can use Union against Gigas.
3) What do you seek for humanity’s future?
"Mankind needs to find a place in this world that doesn't entail dominating it. We need to reach an accord with the Pokemon around us, and we need to grow. The Enlightened offer a hope of that, which I have seen in full since I arrived in Union. They are humanity's future, if you think of that way."
4) What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
"I wasn't raised with it. But... her humility and understanding remind me of someone I used to know. We could learn a lot from her example about how to see the world and understand our place in it. But, it's also a warning of what happens, if mankind refuses to grow. It is a warning we may not have heeded."
5) What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"People should be able to reach their own conclusions. Those who blindly follow what others say... or whatever they want, without considering its implications, are walking down a hard road to nowhere."
6) The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
"I think they would have no problem with Quattro Bajeena."
LIE. Obviously, by omission. Char wouldn't expect to really be judged well; he pursued revenge at the expense of all else, used Pokemon to further his ends, and went with Gigas's worse because of his own personal mission. He doubts that he is the sort of person that the gods would like. He isn't sure that he ever could be.
7) What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
"To make sure that humanity advances. We have to learn from the Enlightened, and to grow closer to the Pokemon and the world around us. We've already come carelessly close to repeating the mistakes of the past. That isn't a disaster that we can afford to repeat."
8) When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
"Bonding with it. The understanding we can gain... that is more important than any research or battle prowess we might gain."
9) In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
"To betray our ideals, in the name of personal gain."
IT'S COMPLICATED. Char really feels this, but he will define what he does for the greater good in funny ways. He will make excuses, sometimes, for doing what he would want to do, and give it more importance than it is.
10) What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
"The uncharted caves. In the end, we need to explore new horizons if we're to grow."
